When your résumé is lacking, you’re likely to get a job in a design industry you don’t know much about, said Steve Waugh, president and CEO of Waugh & Associates.
“If you want to get in that field, you really need to know a lot about it,” he said.
“You want to know what it takes to get into the job.”
In fact, according to Waugh’s latest annual report on hiring talent, only a quarter of U.S. employers said they’re hiring graphic designers for full-time positions.
So how do you know whether you can find the right job in your field?
The best way is to hire people who know their field, said Waugh.
You can do that by looking at the work they did before they moved to a new industry.
“They’re going to know their work better than someone who just came in and started with the same job,” he explained.
“I think it’s important to know how the industry you’re looking at is different from the industry where you are now.”
Waugh said a good example of this is graphic design.
While there are many companies that offer graphic design as a full-timers job, they’re still only a tiny fraction of the jobs available in the industry.
Waugh also pointed out that graphic design is a fast-growing industry and you’ll find more openings than openings.
“For example, the graphic design and digital marketing field is expected to grow by 3.4% in 2021, which would mean it will take a total of 16.3 million jobs to fill,” he wrote.
And while it may seem like you’ll have a tough time finding a job right away, it’s not always that simple.
You might not have a lot of experience in a particular field and that could help.
“Sometimes you can get a lot more experience in something that is really different than what you were doing before,” said Waug.
“When you look at a portfolio, you might have been doing a lot different things than the work you’ve done before.”
For example, if you’ve been working in web design, you may have more experience with image design than in other types of design.
Waug said the best way to determine what type of experience you have is to check the job openings on job boards.
“Some people will just post their resume and see if they get any work,” he told The Salt.
“But if you look for those postings, you can see if the company has more experience than you.”
In addition, you should look for jobs that are open to people who already have a portfolio.
“It’s very important to ask what they’re going through before you ask them for help,” he added.
The more experience you’ve had, the more likely you’ll get a good response.
“Asking for help doesn’t mean you can’t get the job,” Waugh advised.
“Just ask for a resume and let them know that you are qualified and are willing to work with them.”
If you’ve already worked in your area of expertise, you have the chance to learn a lot by applying yourself.
“This can be really rewarding,” he stressed.
“There are lots of great opportunities to find a job and it’s good to have experience in your own area.”
Be sure to check out the job listings and see what others have to say about your position.
“Do they have an email list?,” Waug asked.
“Are they hiring?”
Waugh pointed out one way to do this is by joining the LinkedIn LinkedIn community.
“These are the people who have been involved with their industry and their area of specialization,” he noted.
You’ll be able to get valuable feedback from other members of the community.
It’s also good to meet with people you don,t know and to ask them if they would consider you for a position.
If they have any experience, it may be worth applying yourself to a position that suits your strengths.
For example: “I’d be more interested in working with a designer that’s experienced in the digital domain,” Wauch said.
That’s why he suggests you hire someone who has at least five years of experience with design.
“That way you know that they know the field well,” he continued.
“A lot of the people you hire will have a background in their area, they’ve worked with that area and they’re very open to learning.”
“It can also be very helpful to have a resume that is not too long and that is a little bit more than three pages,” Waughlin said.
He said that’s what he uses to get his resume in front of potential employers.
If you can manage to find the kind of resume you want, Waugh recommends doing a Google search on your field of specialization and then doing a keyword search on the job listing.
